Roma High Robotics Team Qualifies for National Sea Perch Competition

On January 17, 2020 UTRGV kicked off its HESTEC Week with their annual Sea Perch Robotics Competition, and Roma High School was one of the 27 robotics teams participating from high schools around the Valley. Upon arriving at the Margaret M. Clark Aquatic Center, the Roma Gladiator Team was called in right away for the day's first event, but they were up to the challenge.

After the first event, the students were ready right away to take on the next challenge, posting an awesome time of 1 minute and 5 seconds on the obstacle course, which was one of the day's best scores. During the final event, the students explained to a panel of judges from the Navy how they followed the steps of the engineering design process to design, build, test, troubleshoot and modify their robot for optimal performance during the events.

After all the points were tallied, the Roma High Team had earned second place, which also earned them the opportunity to participate in this year's National Sea Perch Challenge, which will take place at The University of Maryland on May 30-31, where they will compete against teams from all over the country.

The Roma High Sea Perch Robotics Team is comprised of members Abraham Rios (senior), Julie Hernandez (junior), Ashley Magana (junior), Victor Hernandez (sophomore) and Luis Garza-Cantu (sophomore).
